Check around sink drains and under cabinets for leaks. If left unattended, leaks may cause water damage to the cabinet and floor. It will also allow mold to form.  Water lines to your refrigerator should be checked for leaks as well. Water stains on ceilings and walls are a good indication you have a pipe leak or that water is getting in from the outside.

Keeping roof gutters and down spouts free of debris will help assure that water does not drip down the exterior of your home's basement.  Water that does not drain away from your home can seep through your basement walls introducing moisture into porous material such as drywall or paneling. This will not only destroy the drywall or paneling, but will promote the growth of mold.
